A minor cannabinoid structurally related to THC; partial CB1 agonist with distinct dose-dependent effects.
Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) is a minor cannabinoid structurally similar to THC but with a shorter side chain. It behaves as a low-dose CB1 antagonist and a higher-dose partial agonist — the inverse of THC's straightforward agonism — which gives it a distinct pharmacological profile.
Pre-clinical and small clinical research has investigated THCV for appetite suppression, glycaemic regulation in type 2 diabetes, and potential anti-seizure effects. Real-world clinical evidence in humans remains limited and THCV is not a standard target of SA Section 21 cannabinoid prescribing. Most strains contain only small THCV concentrations; products marketed for THCV-specific effects are typically novel and carry less rigorous clinical support than THC- or CBD-dominant options.
